Bitcoin

Bitcoin is the world’s first digital currency that was created in 2009 by a mysterious entity named Satoshi Nakamoto. As a digital currency or
cryptocurrency, Bitcoin operates without a central bank or single administrator. Instead, Bitcoin can be sent via a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networking, devoid of intermediaries.Bitcoins are not issued or backed by any governments or banks, and Bitcoin is not considered to be legal tender, although they do have status as an acknowledged transfer of value in some jurisdictions. Rather than composing a physical currency, Bitcoins are pieces of code that can be sent and received across a kind of distributed ledger network called a blockchain. Transactions on the Bitcoin network are confirmed by a network of computers (or nodes) that solve a series of complex equations. This process is called mining. In exchange for mining, the computers receive rewards in the form of new Bitcoins. Mining grows increasingly difficult over time, and the rewards get smaller and smaller. There is a total of 21 million Bitcoins. As of May 2020, there are 18.3 million Bitcoins in circulation. This number changes approximately every 10 minutes when new blocks are mined. Presently, each new block adds 12.5 bitcoins into circulation.Since its inception, Bitcoin has remained the most popular and largest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap in the world. Bitcoin’s popularity has contributed significantly to the release of thousands of other cryptocurrencies, called “altcoins.” While the crypto market was originally hegemonic, today’s landscape features countless altcoins.Bitcoin ControversyBitcoin has been extremely controversial since its original launch. Given its mercurial nature, Bitcoin has been criticized for its use in illegal transactions and money laundering. As its impossible to trace, these attributes make Bitcoin the ideal vehicle for illicit behavior. Moreover, critics point to its high electricity consumption for mining, rampant price volatility, and thefts from exchanges. Bitcoin has been seen as a speculative bubble given its lack of oversight. The crypto has weathered multiple collapses and survived over a decade so far. Unlike its launch back in 2009, Bitcoin today is viewed far differently and is much more accepted by merchants and other entities.

Digital Wallet

A digital wallet is a popular mechanism referring to an electronic device, online service, or software program that allows one party to make electronic transactions with another party. This involves the bartering or exchange of digital currency, including cryptocurrency for goods and services. Money can be deposited in the digital wallet prior to any transaction, which also includes an individual’s bank account that is linked to the digital wallet. A digital wallet can include more than just digital currency, but also credentials such as a driver’s license, a health card, or other forms of ID.Cryptocurrency Digital WalletsWithin the crypto space, digital wallets are a necessity and the only method for exchanging crypto or engaging in transactions. In order to own cryptocurrency, you must be in control of the crypto coin’s private keys. Private keys represent long strings of alpha-numeric characters. A digital wallet is the place where these private keys are stored. There are three types of cryptocurrency wallets: hardware, software, or paper. A cryptocurrency wallet can also be characterized as either “hot” or “cold”. A hot wallet is a wallet that is connected to the internet. These include wallets that are stored on web-connected devices such as computers or mobile phones. Some hot wallets allow you to store your cryptocurrency on your own device while others store your cryptocurrency for you on their own devices or depositories.Conversely, cold wallets are devices that are not connected to the Internet. These include encrypted storage devices and paper wallets. Both hot and cold wallets have their own positives and negatives. Security of a digital wallet is paramount as a breach can threaten the security of all its contents.

Hundreds of Salvadorians have started complaining on social media about their Bitcoin mysteriously disappearing from their Chivo wallet. A Twitter user called “El Comisionado” collected several tweets about the matter on December 18. Users complained that various amounts of Bitcoin worth ranging from $100 to $16,000 have gone missing from their Chovi wallet. The mysterious disappearance of funds happens without users authorizing transactions. El Comisionado’s thread highlighted about 50 tweets that complained about a total of $96,223.83 worth of Bitcoin went missing from users’ digital wallets.

Several tweets collected by El Comisionado include screenshots showing unauthorized transactions from the affected Chivo wallets. A user, who said to have lost $16,000 in Bitcoin, complained about the inability by El Salvador’s government to investigate the missing funds. He threatened to go to the media if the government does not unearth the root cause of the problem.

Tom’s Hardware – an online publication that helps consumers to buy the best hardware and build the best PC – contacted El Salvador’s government officials in charge of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security for comment about the complaints, but have not received a response.

Chivo Wallet Affected Technical Challenges

The development by Salvadorans reporting about their Bitcoin mysteriously disappearing is a huge disappointment facing the Chivo wallet. It is a setback that discourages citizens from using the app promoted by President Nayib Bukele. Problems accessing wallets, verifying data, withdrawing funds from ATMs, and the government not depositing the $30 bonus that Bukele promised all Chivo users are major challenges frequently complained of. Issues about bugs and technical discrepancies in the Chivo wallet have also been reported. All these show that the digital wallet may not be secure, which as a result is affecting its mainstream adoption. In the past, users have also complained about the issue of identity fraud. In October, hundreds of local citizens complained that hackers opened Chivo Wallets using their ID numbers to claim the $30 bitcoin incentive being offered to people who register in the app. With Bitcoin adoption, President Bukele positioned his Central American country at the center of a global innovation about the future of money. But the process is not without challenges and critics.
