50 Million BTC on exchanges?

Good Evening everyone. I’ve seen a few tweets today stating to get your Bitcoin off the exchanges because apparently there are a total of 50 million Bitcoin between all exchanges. Is this just a couple people being spreading FUD? And if it is true, how can an exchange sell Bitcoin that doesn’t exist?
If there are 50 million and everyone sends to a cold wallet, there would be some pretty unhappy people.
