After athletes, celebrities, and politicians moved into the nonfungible token (NFTs) mania, the budding sector has now pulled in a veteran astronaut to share his time in space via the NFTs. During a recent interview, a retired United States astronaut, Scott Kelly, said that he has a ‘growing curiosity’ about NFTs and blockchain technology.
Based on the statement by Kelly, he has been keeping a keen eye on blockchain for the last six years and has now seen its potential. He stated:
“I have developed a growing curiosity on how it will play a role in space development which is something I would love to be a part of.”
Kelly recognizes that blockchain has lots of potentials and thinks that it will soon contribute to space development. Due to all that, the astronaut wanted to introduce himself to the NFT community and help in contributing to charity.
Recently, the veteran spaceman released an NFT collection titled Dreams Out of This World that reimagines Kelly’s space journey via several digital artworks. That drop sold 3,333 NFTs and collected about $500,000 in sales which will be sent to the nonprofit Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) to assist the people affected by the continuing war in Ukraine:
“The Ukraine crisis is something I hold very close to my heart which is why we will be donating 100% of the proceeds from the initial sale through GEM in support of Ukrainian relief.”
While Kelly acknowledges that there are different ways of helping, he is thankful that launching the NFTs collection enabled him to help victims of this crisis:
“I feel grateful to be launching a project at a time that allows me to support them in a way I may have not been able to do on my own.”
The astronaut hopes that his entry into the NFTs world might encourage other astronauts to explore the sector too. He added:
“NFTs can offer astronauts a new outlet for sharing their experiences as opposed to posting this on the internet where it can quickly be lost in the shuffle.”
In the meantime, a Web3 initiative known as Reli3f raised around $1.5 million for Ukrainian aid efforts. Through its second collection of NFTs, the project raised funds that will get distributed to different charities that focus on the Ukrainian crisis.
