One South African university, the University Of Johannesburg (UJ), has confirmed that starting this year, it will issue blockchain-based certificates to the students who graduate from the learning institution. The university administrators insisted that a blockchain-based certification system will help in preventing fraud and eventually end the production of fake documents.
QR Code For Every Certificate
The South African learning institution is turning to blockchain to issue certificates starting in 2022. Based on the official report from the institution, every qualification document issued by the University of Johannesburg will have a QR code that will be used to validate its authenticity.
As perfectly explained in the Mybroadband report, the academic institution is adopting the blockchain-based certification system as part of its attempt to prevent fraud and the counterfeiting of UJ-issued certificates.
The university’s senior director of central academic administration, Tinus van Zyl, is quoted in a report highlighting why the blockchain-based system is a major improvement from the digital certificate system that UJ introduced some time ago. Based on the statement by Van Zyl, the university’s graduates had been utilizing a digital certificate system to digitally access or share their certificates with prospective employers.
Third-Party Validation Of Certificates
On the other hand, using the blockchain-based system means that the prospective employers and third parties can now also authenticate a graduate’s certificate. Van Zyl said:
“The public is now able to validate the awarded qualifications for UJ graduates without having to contact the University or having to go through a verification agency, just by scanning the QR code on the certificate and best of all, at no cost.”
In the meantime, another university employee, Kinta Burger, is quoted in the report stating that the implementation of the blockchain-based certificate system will assist in safeguarding the university’s reputation and that of the certificates that it issues.
