Same thing happens in stock markets. Thought experiment:
Imagine you had $1 trillion, i.e. enough to move stock markets, and you created an algorithm that just bought $1 trillion of the SP500 over the course of a 1 month at a constant rate, then sold everything over the course of 1 month at a constant rate, and then repeated the cycle with everything you had endlessly.
I believe this strategy would be wildly profitable. You would move markets up, people get excited and buy in, take on leverage, etc. Then you sell into this excitement, i.e. sell the rip, and pull the rug. People get scared, sell for less than they bought in, get margin called, etc. Then you buy into this fear, i.e. buy the dip. Then you repeat this entire process.
I think this would be very profitable. It’s like the tide coming in and out, and every time it does so it swallows countless animals on the beach and takes their nutrients back out to sea.
