This weekend, a Phoenix couple became the first to marry in the Metaverse by exchanging digital vows. On February 5, a virtual audience of 2,000 guests and witnesses gathered in Decentraland for a wedding ceremony officiated by Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick.

Rose Law Group was recruited by the newlyweds, Ryan and Candice Hurley, to help them get married legally. For Jordan Rose, the group’s CEO, this was the first wedding held on the blockchain-based Metaverse.

Rose Law Group’s estate in Decentraland was the wedding ceremony site. “Meta-marriage framework” was created by including a “Virtual Premarital Agreement” that recognized the couple’s virtual identities and digital assets as recorded on the blockchain. An NFT was created by recording the couple’s virtual identities and the location of their marriage in a “Meta-Marriage License.”

Rose explained:

“There currently is no legal framework for marriage in the Metaverse, so whether or not it will be legally binding is more a question of contract.”

Unexpected Technical Errors

Despite the couple’s apparent ambition for their upcoming wedding, there were some quite outdated technological concerns. As soon as Decentraland opened its doors, the NFT presents given out to visitors were all claimed within twenty minutes of the event starting.

To make matters worse, just a few visitors saw Ryan’s digital avatar emerge since Candice’s did not. The bride was either dressed in a frock or a sweatshirt, depending on which server the guests had been divided into. Moreover, in one case the bride was not seen at all.

One participant told the attendees to come to Rose Law Group’s Instagram. The real-world couple was sealing their vows via livestream when they couldn’t get the ceremony to function on Decentraland.
