Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin expressed his disappointment on Twitter at Putin’s decision to go to war and abandon the possibility of a peaceful resolution to the conflict with Ukraine, even though he was born in Russia. Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum’s inventor, had recently expressed optimism for a “wise” Russian choice in response to the risk of conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In the wake of Russia’s launch of military operations, bitcoin is down 7%, trading at $35,071, while Ethereum is down 12% in the last 24 hours, trading at $2368.
Several Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kiev and the city of Kharkiv, were hit by Russian missiles as the sun came up. For the first time since January, the price of bitcoin fell below $35,000 as Russia launched its military action in Ukraine, a selloff several experts have previously warned might increase unless tensions in Eastern Europe are eased. Bitcoin’s value has plummeted by more than $600 billion from its record high of $69,000 in November.
Although oil prices continued to rise, Brent crude futures soared more than 4.5 percent, making it the first time since 2014 that Brent crude crossed $100 per barrel. The S&P 500 (GSPC) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJI), both down almost 2 percent in the previous hour, are seeing an increase in volatility.
