Of all the home design trends of 2022, we’re perhaps most excited to see that vintage furniture is having a moment. Why? Previously loved furniture breaks the mold of generic, mass-produced decor.
Given today’s global supply-chain snarls, snagging manufactured furniture may come with a long shipping delay, but vintage or used furniture can be delivered to your home in a reasonable timeframe. Hooray for not having to wait three months for a dining table!
You may already be familiar with purchasing used and vintage furniture in person. Did you know, though, that there is also a world of websites out there that have an even larger selection of items available to buy?
Whether you’re looking to score a great deal or are on the hunt for decor pieces with history, bookmark the following websites so you can shop for used and vintage furniture from the comfort of your own home.
1. 1stDibs
If you’re searching for unique upholstery or tables, Nicole Fisher recommends 1stDibs, the online marketplace known for a vast offering of luxury items.
“They have such unique materials and a breadth of products, it’s hard not to get sucked in searching for hours,” says Fisher, the CEO and founder of BNR Interiors in New York City. “Thankfully, it’s so easy to navigate that perfect size or price point with their filters.”
On 1stDibs, you can find a wide range of products, from affordable patio furniture to 100-year-old lime green couches priced in the thousands, and many other options in between. To help the process feel less overwhelming, Fisher suggests having a good idea of the specific piece you’re looking for before jumping into the search process.
2. Live Auctioneers
If auctions are more your speed, Live Auctioneers is a must. Unlike other auction sites, such as eBay, Live Auctioneers focuses on higher-end used and vintage objects and is reminiscent of an estate sale. A quick search on the site pulls up a diverse assortment of furniture items, such as daybeds, midcentury modern couches, and antique chairs, that have starting bids as low as $1.
“For those who have some extra time on their hands, you can often score an incredible deal on Live Auctioneers,” says Fisher.
She also points out that the site is a helpful resource if you’re looking for vintage art.
3. Chairish
The online marketplace Chairish has so many used, vintage, and antique options that you are bound to find what you are looking for.
“When I want a large catalog of items, ranging from furniture, lighting, artwork, pillows, and decor, I opt to shop at Chairish,” says Christina Manzo, designer at Decorist. “I can literally spend hours perusing their catalog, and by the end have a whole house full of pieces.”
Manzo advises that when you come across a piece of furniture you love online, make sure that you don’t sit on it. “Place an offer!” she says. “Oftentimes, these pieces go quickly, but the seller will almost always entertain an offer, so you can potentially score your favorite piece for less.”
4. One Kings Lane
One Kings Lane has a healthy amount of new and made-to-order furniture for sale, but the website’s vintage section opens a whole world of furniture possibilities.
Manzo loves scrolling through the vintage section, and says she often finds true gems that perfectly complement a room she’s designing.
“It always catches me off guard as I’m searching, and I love that it feels like I’ve stumbled upon a little treasure,” she says.
5. Sotheby’s ‘Buy Now’
The famous auction house, best known for its artwork sales, also has an “Interiors” shop on its website under the “Buy Now” tab. Interested customers can use filters to help narrow down what they are looking for.
Sotheby’s prices can run a little high, so our experts advise using this site to source the occasional vintage statement piece, rather than using the website to fill an entire home.
6, 7, 8. Etsy, eBay, and Mercari
Websites such as Etsy, eBay, and Mercari are ideal to use if you are looking for home items at more accessible price points. Buyers often go to Etsy and eBay for vintage pieces, while Mercari is a great source for used furniture and decor.
To get the most out of these sites, experts suggest first searching by the design era you are interested in and then narrowing it down to specific pieces you are looking to buy. For example, search term formats like “midcentury modern barware” and “Art Deco lighting” work well.
Also, don’t be shy to ask for more photos if you find something you are interested in.
“An advantage to sourcing through Etsy or eBay is that you have more access to the people who have the merchandise on hand,” says Caron Woolsey, founder of CW Interiors in The Woodlands, TX.
Woolsey reminds buyers that they should expect to pay more for shipping when purchasing from smaller vendors who may not have established relationships with freight companies to secure discounted rates.
It’s also helpful to keep in mind that both Mercari and eBay have “local” filter options. This means you can shop from sellers nearby, which can help lower shipping and delivery costs.
9. Independent vintage stores
Vintage home decor stores that have brick-and-mortar locations may also have websites that offer shipping to out-of-area customers. For example, Ashley DeLapp, founder of Ashley DeLapp Interior Design in Charlotte, NC, recommends the site of Circa Who, an upscale resale furniture shop in Palm Beach, FL.
When buying online, be sure to double-check the quality of the piece and how much you are willing to spend on rehabbing, if necessary.
“Typically, shipping is going to be a good chunk of money, and if you want to have it lacquered or refinished professionally, make sure it’s worth the investment,” DeLapp says.
