Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel may have bought a house together before getting hitched, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t planning to walk down the aisle. And the latest “Property Brothers: Forever Home” gives a preview of what the big wedding day will be like!
In the Season 6 episode “’90s Builder Upgrade,” Drew Scott asks Jonathan about becoming his wedding officiant.
“I could do your wedding,” he offers. Yet Jonathan turns him down.
“You’re going to have way too many duties as best man, so no, you won’t be able to do both,” Jonathan explains.
This romantic topic seems fitting, since their latest clients, Sarah and John, got married in their home. Yet the house is now badly overdue for some updates, and the couple is struggling to agree on a style. While Sarah loves light and bright finishes, John wants a dark, moody look.
Armed with a $170,000 renovation budget, the Scott brothers strike a balance decorwise that everyone loves. Check out how they pull it off, plus some smart take-home lessons that can help all couples (maybe even Jonathan and his lovely bride-to-be).
Black metal adds a modern vibe
Sarah and John have made some great memories in their house; they exchanged their vows in front of the fireplace. Yet this feature, though romantic, looks dated and needs a face-lift—and Jonathan and Drew are happy to oblige.
When it becomes clear that Sarah and John can’t agree on a color scheme, the brothers help them compromise by building a beautiful white fireplace with black details for storage on either side.
“We’re going to incorporate the light tones that Sarah loves in the tiles and the walls, and the dark tones that John prefers in the black frames,” Drew says. “It’ll be the perfect marriage of both their styles, which is appropriate because they got married right in front of this fireplace.”
A light kitchen with dark accents is spacious and has personality
Sarah and John’s kitchen is a ’90s nightmare with a cramped layout, odd dual-level island, and dated wood tones. Drew and Jonathan know they’ll need to update the space, but they aren’t sure if they should add white cabinets like Sarah wants, or go with John’s darker style request.
In the end, they decide to make this smaller kitchen feel bigger with light features and dark accents throughout. They install black pendant lights, black cabinet pulls, and even black chairs on the island. John is thrilled by how much bigger the kitchen looks.
“The old kitchen in this home was a cramped holdover from the ’90s that did not represent this family at all,” Jonathan says. “We’re giving them a gorgeous chef’s kitchen with stunning quartz countertops and matching backsplash. And, with a large new island, they’ll have more than enough room and seating to entertain friends or feed a rowdy bunch of kids.”
A glass barn door lets light in but shuts out noise
Drew and Jonathan want to be able to separate the kitchen from the dining room, so they come up with a door design that will allow for a little privacy while still keeping the house feeling open.
“During the inspiration tour, Sarah and John discovered that they love the look of an elegant, dark metal accent, especially around glass,” Drew says. “So we wanted to incorporate that into the design.”
The brothers come up with a solution that also plays into the popular modern farmhouse trend: a sliding glass barn door. The black works with John’s style and matches the black metal in the living room. Plus, it allows light into this space, and can easily slide open or closed depending on when Sarah and John want some noise reduction.
“You still get the light,” Jonathan says. “Or have it open, and it just looks like art on the wall.”
A simple bench can serve as a mudroom
With two young kids, Rhett and Claire, and a big backyard, this family likely struggles with muddy boots and tracking in snow during the Canadian winter. The Scotts know that a mudroom by the back door would be ideal, but there’s no space. Instead, they remove the dining table and replace it with a convenient bench with storage underneath.
It’s a smart alternative to a mudroom because the bench provides a place for the kids to take off their boots.
“Rhett and Claire will no longer have to drag snow into the house in the winter,” Jonathan says. “They’ll have a place to sit down, take their boots off, and store them away.”
Add a floor tile statement in the entryway
To finish this mini mudroom space, the brothers add tile by the door. This tile will be easy to clean after removing muddy shoes. It’s also a unique and beautiful feature that complements the new hardwood.
“We’re giving this family a very cool tile feature near their new back door that will blend seamlessly with the hardwood flooring we’re laying down,” Drew says. “It’ll be a really individualized touch that will help provide this home with its own original style.”
