Linda Gray starred for years as J.R. Ewing’s long-suffering wife on the TV drama “Dallas.” The prime-time soap opera was set on the Southfork Ranch in Texas, but that property wasn’t the only ranch in Gray’s life.

The actress spent her downtime on a prominent ranch of her own in Santa Clarita, CA. It isn’t as large as Southfork, but it might possess a more prestigious architectural pedigree. Her ranch house was built by modernist architect A. Quincy Jones.

Now available for $2,995,000, Oak Tree Ranch has been Gray’s home for over 50 years. Gray’s husband, legendary Warner Bros. Music art director Ed Thrasher, had talked Jones into building a home for them. At the time, the architect was building the Warner Bros. Music building in Burbank.

Gray shares this charming story and other fascinating details in a video she made about the ranch.

“My home is … about enjoyment,” she says on the video. “It’s about solitude, it’s about relaxing. It’s really about getting to be friends with yourself.”

Centuries-old oak trees dot the 2.66-acre property, which also includes stables for four horses, a tack room, and a barn. There are also organic gardens, a koi pond, and a chicken coop.

Even without the actress-fronted video, buyers would be attracted to the five-bedroom, four-bathroom, 4,800-square-foot home.

Completed in 1973, the three-bedroom main house takes its cues from midcentury modern style. Floors are made of heart pine, and the pillars were constructed from the trunks of pines that Gray personally selected.

“I said, ‘This is a big house, it has to have big wood,’” she says on the video. “I love them. They added the finishing touch to what was already beautiful.”

The large, open kitchen was designed by Josh Schweitzer, the architect husband of chef Mary Sue Milliken. It’s equipped with professional-grade appliances, including a wood-burning pizza oven.

Another of Gray’s favorite features is the primary suite.

“I wanted to have a fireplace in there. I just think it’s yummy and romantic,” she says.

“I adored this property, and I still do. It’s an oasis,” says Gray. There’s little doubt new owners will feel the same way.
