We’re always intrigued when we see a public building like, say, a church or firehouse transformed into a remarkable private home. But we’ve never seen anything like this 1940s pump house that’s now an elegant luxury home in the Pasadena, CA, area.

On the market for $4,965,000, it’s located in the luxury enclave known as San Marino.

The brick building was “previously used to bring water to Wilson Lake, now Lacy Park,” says listing agent Darrell Done, with Coldwell Banker.

Lacy Park is a glorious, old-fashioned neighborhood park where friends and families gather for evening strolls and July Fourth picnics. A house within walking distance to the park, as well as the Huntington Library and Gardens, will fetch a premium.

The light-filled residence was featured in the book “Modernism Rediscovered” thanks to its “fascinating metamorphosis,” Done says.

This luxury home started out as a pump house in the 1940s.

Architect Whitney Smith and builder Phillip Roulac are responsible for the building’s remarkable transformation.

“Every room in the house has been restored with new custom-designed doors, hardware, windows, and lighting throughout,” says Done.

The residence features the original exposed brick walls. They’re especially prominent in the spacious living room with its parquet wood floor, fireplace, and beamed ceiling.

The mix of old and new has created a potent blend, according to the agent.

“The result is a striking combination of the original brick pump house from the early part of the 20th century and the modern lines and conveniences of today,” says Done.

The home last changed hands in 2012 for $2.6 million, and a number of features have been enhanced over the past decade.
