Featuring swooping copper roofs, three interconnected pools, and an overhead shark tank, a distinctive dwelling in the California desert has raised the bar.

A spectacular desert estate in the hills above Palm Desert, CA, sold for $42 million—apparently the highest price recorded in the coveted Coachella Valley.

“It is the most expensive sale ever of a single-family home in all the communities of the desert, including Palm Springs, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, and the Coachella Valley” said the listing agent, Steve Frankel, who shared the listing with a fellow Coldwell Banker agent, Jade Mills, and with Bighorn Properties.

Stylish and futuristic, the compound was built in 2007 at an estimated cost of $30 million, for the late Duane Hagadone.

Hagadone was a resort developer and publisher, most noted for the Coeur d’Alene Resort and Golf Course in northern Idaho, which is famed for its 14th hole floating green in Lake Coeur d’Alene. He died in April 2021 at the age of 88. He also owned newspapers in Idaho, Washington, and Montana.

The sprawling property, set on nearly 8 acres, is also one of the biggest private residences in the area.

Between the main house, the separate office, and the large guesthouse, it has more than 32,000 square feet of indoor living space, including seven bedrooms and 12 bathrooms.

Featuring an exterior lined with panther slate from India, as well as retractable glass walls lined in bronze, the home blends right into the arid ridgeline amid the desert scrub.

Created by the architectural designer Guy Dreier, the compound overlooks the Bighorn Golf Club, the mountains, and the desert cities beyond.

It sits within the Bighorn Golf Club, so one of the area’s favorite recreational pastimes is readily available to residents.

Many of the home’s custom features would wow even the most jaded mansion aficionado. One of the most dazzling features is the enclosed hallway leading to the dining room, lined with aquariums filled with colorful exotic fish on each side, and with the shark tank overhead.
