Crypto exchange FTX’s latest advertisement featured Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star Larry David. The ad ran for the first time during Super Bowl 56, which took place on Sunday, February 13, 2022. The ad is designed to convert skeptics over to cryptocurrency acceptance and to grow the digital currency ecosystem. FTX’s 60-second spot, to be played in the first half of the game, has Larry David as its “anti-sponsor.”
Larry David is cynical about cryptocurrencies.
The co-creator of the two generation-defining comedy shows, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm, is known for his cynical approach towards everything. The ad shows Larry David being a skeptic of the invention of the wheel, folks, toilets, and doubting if a man can ever land on the moon. He is also not too high on cryptocurrencies. FTX Co-Founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried said, “We need to meet people where they are – and that means embracing skepticism. A lot of people who are now the biggest advocates of crypto once had significant reservations.” There’s also an extended director’s cut of the ad.
Cryptocurrencies continue to become more mainstream.
According to an Ascent survey conducted last year, over half of Americans who own cryptocurrency bought it for the very first time in 2021. Over 20% of Americans (56.7 million) have never bought cryptocurrency. But they are likely to buy in the next year. Crypto adoption not just in the US but all over the world is continuing to rise. FTX revealed that its average daily trading volume grew by 608% in 2021. “Total spot crypto traded in the first full year of operation eclipsed $67B. Now, 1.2M users are on the exchange, an increase of 11,900% in 2021.”
