Service along this route was suspended following the surge of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2021. Earlier this week, Aer Lingus resumed its direct flights to New York JFK and Boston Logan International from Shannon Airport. The initiative marked the return of connectivity to the United States’ northeast originating from the Irish city after two years.

At the turn of the year, Aer Lingus was said to be planning a record number of flights to North America this summer. It was preparing for 7,782 flights to the United States and Canada. That figure is up 10.9% against the summer of 2019. In total, there will be 14 direct transatlantic routes. Interestingly, the Airbus A321LR will be an integral figure on the routes from Shannon, Dublin, and Manchester.

Currently, Aer Lingus is keen to respond to strong demand for North American activities. At first catering to the VFR market after the downturn, it is scheduled for an increase in tourism in the coming months. In late 2021, the airline unveiled fares as little as €169 each way to several North American destinations. For now, the airline’s network includes:

  • Washington
  • Boston
  • Toronto
  • Chicago
  • Seattle
  • New York
  • Los Angeles
  • San Francisco
  • Philadelphia

On March 10, Flight EL135 left Shannon at 13:37 to land in Boston about 6.5 hours later at 20:10. A day later, Flight EI111 left for New York scheduled to land at 15:00 after flying for 12:55 hours. The flight also kicked off another daily service.

The airline has been looking forward to the return of these flights.

Massive Demand

Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Aer Lingus, Donal Moriarty, explained in the following statement:

“We are delighted to resume our transatlantic routes from Shannon to Boston and New York, restoring regional connectivity to the mid-west of Ireland and allowing Aer Lingus to unite friends, families, and businesses once more. This summer we will be operating our largest transatlantic seat capacity from Shannon in 17 years. Aer Lingus customers will avail of a more innovative and sustainable travel experience as they travel across the Atlantic in our two A321LR neo which will operate from Shannon airport and our unique warm Aer Lingus welcome.”

According to the statement by Moriarty, those travelers heading across the Atlantic Ocean with Aer Lingus will be offered complimentary meals and drinks, WiFi, and hours of in-flight entertainment in the cabin. Moreover, they can benefit from the United States customs pre-clearance before departing Shannon.

Industry Recognition

With a huge Irish diaspora, it is not surprising why Aer Lingus had been keen to resume service from Shannon to Boston. Nevertheless, it is not just Ireland’s flag carrier that recognizes possible in the Northeastern city. United Airlines recently launched the start of a new Boston service from London Heathrow. In the meantime, the likes of ITA confirmed operations to the destination.

It has been a busy month for Aer Lingus when it comes to relaunching flights. Aer Lingus Regional is also relaunching Belfast City service, with flights to Birmingham starting on March 24. In general, it has been a tough several years for the company.

The airline had its operations rocked amid national and international restrictions, and its transatlantic operations heavily suffered as a result. Thus, Aer Lingus will now be looking for brighter and more interesting prospects in 2022, mostly since some of its most popular routes are returning and increasing capacity.
