Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas brought an unrivaled amount of creativity to Season 3 of “Rock the Block.” The renovation competition show pits teams of HGTV stars against one another to remodel a single-family home and infuse their design style into the property, all while adding the most resale value. Bynum and Thomas, who are partners in life and co-hosts of their own show, “Bargain Block,” pulled out the stops to build one of the most artistic homes we’ve ever seen.
And the price to own this unique property? A cool $1.25 million. We recently learned that the five-bedroom, 4.5-bath house designed by Bynum and Thomas is for sale, so buyers on the hunt for a one-of-a-kind pad should come running.
This home is a “work of art, the most unique one this season,” says the listing agent, Jason Harper with HQ Real Estate.
More than 200 people have come to tour the home, and Harper continues to have showing appointments.
Bynum and Thomas’ creative designs won the respect of the judges and their fellow competitors, but the team never won a weekly design challenge. On a show where the name of the game is adding resale value, many of the judges believed that the home was overly custom and would attract only a specific type of buyer.
So the question remains: Will the team’s bespoke designs help or hinder the sale of this home?
“This aesthetic looks very Southwestern to me, something that would fit well in Arizona, New Mexico, or California, rather than South Carolina,” says Khari Washington, a real estate agent with 1st United Realty in Riverside, CA.
Unusual design elements such as the massive chandeliers “are very precise and need to be toned down,” she adds.
But there are many charming details, too, like the firewood storage areas, dark kitchen cabinets, and exposed wood beams.
“The high-end interior doors and mirrors are also appealing and may help the house to sell,” says Washington.
“Funky looks are more than just fun—they’re trending,” says Cedric Stewart, a real estate agent with Keller Williams in Washington, DC. “From what I’ve heard from homebuyers of late is that times and tastes have changed, and the same old granite counters and stainless-steel appliances aren’t going to excite everyone anymore.”
He says offering just a few unique design elements can set the home apart—and even increase the bottom line.
One of the most memorable features of the home is the sculptural art piece in the main bedroom. Facing a design challenge to incorporate a coastal-themed material in the bedroom suite, Bynum and Thomas chose boat sails. Bynum used 6-inch strips of the sails and a staple gun to realize his vision of Van Gogh‘s “Starry Night”—”but in fabric.”
The main bathroom is a symphony of luxury with a free-standing tub, dual water closets, two vanities, and a circular open shower with two showerheads. The shower is a showstopper that literally floored the other competitors when they saw it.
The second-floor loft has a fabulous statement wall, plus three more bedrooms and two full baths. The third floor features a sauna and bonus space that could be a massage room, yoga studio, or home office.
Earth tones and soft hues envelop the rooms, including the baby nursery with its hand-painted mural of a mountain.
Over the garage, there’s even more room to spread out in the 365-square-foot guest unit that includes a bedroom, full bath, and small kitchen.
The backyard is an entertainer’s delight thanks to the outdoor kitchen, spacious porch, pergola-topped patio, and fire pit with seating. The garden comes with two raised beds for plants.
“What this team has done is impressive and hopefully it’ll be appreciated in the Carolinas,” says Stewart.
Such a house—with Bynum and Evans’ signature design—in his neck of the woods would get dozens of offers, he adds. “This flavor is hard to find in the DC area right now.”
