David Bromstad has helped many families find houses on “My Lottery Dream Home,” but it’s not every day he needs to find a place for a family of nine.

In the Season 12 episode “The Akron Bunch,” Bromstad meets engaged couple Marva and Nathan, who need a home for her four kids and his three. Luckily, Marva recently won $150,000 on a scratcher, putting their home budget at $300,000.

Bromstad shows the couple three family-friendly homes and points out the best features for a busy family. Read on to find out which house they pick, then find out what’s a must-have if you have a big crew.

You’ll need plenty of everyday dining space

The first home Bromstad shows Marva and Nathan is a four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home in a new community. The house, which is listed at $275,000, has a big dining space, which is great for a large family.

“It’s a great size,” Bromstad says of the space.

“Yes, it is,” Marva says, looking at the six-seat table in the space. “And we won’t have seven kids every night. So this is perfect.”

Molding can make a home feel extra cozy

The second option Bromstad shows Marva and Nathan is another four-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom home. But this one is listed just above their budget, at $309,900. Still, this 79-year-old house comes with a lot of charm, especially in the molding.

“Anytime you see dentil molding, it’s definitely traditional—it has a soul,” Bromstad says of the wood detailing in the living room.

Marva says the feature seems “family-oriented” and makes the space look extra homey.

Find a kitchen big enough for the whole family

Another perk of this home is the big kitchen.

“It’s not big as yesterday’s [house], but it feels roomy and it has enough potential for us all to be in the kitchen if we need to be at once,” she says.

While many homebuyers will focus on the aesthetics and updates of a kitchen, Marva is right to think about space—especially with seven kids.

Big bathrooms are a big-family necessity

House No. 3 has only 1.5 bathrooms, but at least the upstairs bathroom is big.

The third property they see is a five-bedroom, 1.5-bathroom home listed at $264,000. The home is older, built in 1924, but it has some modern conveniences, like a large bathroom upstairs.

Plus, Nathan points out that he likes the finishes, including the cabinet doors and the sink. While every home might not have many restrooms, at least they should be big enough for multiple kids to brush their teeth at the same time.

Outdoor space the whole family can enjoy

This home has a lot of things going for it, but perhaps the biggest highlight is the backyard. The space features shady trees and a stone patio.

“Can you imagine what this is going to look like in the fall?” Bromstad asks.

“It’s going to be gorgeous,” Nathan says.

Marva adds that the yard could be decorated for any holiday or event, making it a great place to gather as a family.

It’s a good reminder that the house isn’t the only thing buyers should look at. A big backyard, with great space for entertaining, can be a selling point for a big family.

Which house is the winner?

These buyers ultimately decide on the second home.

“We just thought that was the perfect place for us,” Marva tells Bromstad.

One month later, the couple and their kids are settling in at the new house. Marva and Nathan are glad the older girls can finally have their own room as they start to gain more independence. Plus, with a comfortable living space and a yard, the home is cozy and welcoming for the younger kids. They even have plans to add a trampoline, pool, and maybe a treehouse to keep the children entertained.

They spent $309,000 on the house, and Marva admits, “It’s a little bit over our budget, you know, but we think we’ll be happy here.”
