Halle Barry and the Property Brothers

HGTV

Property brothers Drew and Jonathan Scott have helped many homeowners create a better workspace at home, but on the latest “Celebrity IOU,” the renovation they do for Halle Berry is particularly touching since it’s for someone who helped Berry realize her potential when she was just a kid.

In the episode “Halle Berry’s Beautiful Gift for Cherished Teacher,” the Scott brothers learn that Berry’s fifth-grade teacher, Yvonne, has been her longtime mentor. Berry hopes to show her gratitude by making over Yvonne’s home in Cleveland. Yvonne still tutors kids in her kitchen, as she had done with Berry long ago, and the “Catwoman” star knows her sweet mentor deserves a comfortable, functional workspace that makes her good deeds all the more rewarding.

The challenge, according to the property brothers, is to update this home while still holding on to its old-fashioned character.

“Overall, we’ve preserved a lot of historical charm of Yvonne’s home but give it a contemporary face-lift in both style and function,” Jonathan says when the work is done.

Read on to see how Berry and the brothers create a unique workspace, and learn plenty of other tips you might be inspired to try around your own abode, too.

Fill a small kitchen with bold colors

Yvonne’s kitchen might be small, but Drew and Jonathan know they can do a lot if they update the space with new cabinets, new counters, and a contemporary style. When it comes to colors, Berry helps pick the right hue.

“I know she likes warm, yummy tones, cozy,” she says, looking at cabinet door options. “I think this white is good because it’s not stark. It’s got warmth to the white, which would be really good.”

Jonathan likes the choice and suggests dark quartz for one of the countertops and the backsplash.

“Just because it’s a small space doesn’t mean it can’t be dramatic,” he explains.

Bring some bling into the kitchen

When choosing kitchen design, Jonathan knows that cabinet and drawer pulls can bring the whole design together. After choosing the creamy white cabinets and simple quartz counters, he suggests something flashy for the hardware.

“We have warm, neutral, inviting tones. I think with all of that, brass would go really nice for the hardware,” Jonathan says. “And then I think we’ve brought the bling.”

Add a table to make the peninsula extra functional

Yvonne is used to tutoring kids at her kitchen table, and Berry remembers many days spent learning in this very space. So Berry wants to make sure Yvonne still has a special spot to sit and talk with her students. The brothers come up with the idea to add a round tabletop to the end of the peninsula, giving Yvonne a roomy spot to spread out books and papers.

“It’s not like one solution fits every single kitchen,” Jonathan says. “And this is a pretty challenging kitchen ’cause it’s a smaller footprint. But we want it to work perfectly for Yvonne.”

The unique feature ends up being a great addition to this small kitchen, turning this peninsula into an ideal spot to gather.

Dark colors work great in a room with lots of natural light

With a dramatic kitchen, the brothers aren’t sure if they should give the dining room a similar bold look or tone it down with a more neutral color.

“In the dining room, with the walls being opened up now, there’s a lot more light in there,” Jonathan tells Berry, showing her paint splotches. “Do you think that we should keep it kind of light or kind of traditional, or do you think Yvonne would be willing to go bold?”

Berry likes one of the darker tones, saying, “I’m going to force her to be bold, because she is bold.”

Drew and Jonathan are happy with the choice, especially when they finally start painting the room.

“I like the dark tone on this wall. It’s going to be a nice pop in here,” Drew says.

When the dining room is finished, it looks perfect. The gray walls work great with the kitchen’s black and white color palette, creating a moody look that is very chic.

Use natural-tone floors for a timeless look

Berry and the property brothers want to honor the history of this 100-year-old house, but they realize they won’t be able to keep Yvonne’s flooring, since the original wood is in rough shape. So Drew and Jonathan choose engineered wood in a natural wood tone, which makes the flooring look like it could be original. Bonus: The new floors are extra durable.

“Even though it would’ve been great to preserve Yvonne’s original hardwood floors, in the end, this engineered hardwood won’t only stand up better to the humid summers and cold winters that Cleveland’s known for but also to the weekly foot traffic of Yvonne’s grandkids,” Jonathan says.

“Also, we have the wider, medium-tone board, and that’s going to make the space feel brighter and add the comfort and sophistication that Halle really wants for Yvonne,” Drew adds. “Modern, yet still cozy.”
