NFTs or non-fungible tokens surged to astronomical heights in 2021, amassing over 17 billion dollars. The term was even termed the word of the year by Collins Dictionary, soaring its popularity even higher.

With such figures on display, the industry naturally experienced many emerging projects. From music, gaming, streaming, real estate to crypto, NFTs breached almost every mainstream industry. Even top artists and sportsmen established ties with NFTs to garner instant gains.

Thus, as the year nears its end, here is an overview of the biggest NFT sales and collections in 2021.

Larva Labs – CryptoPunks

Released in 2017, CryptoPunks by Larva Labs is among the first NFTs in the market. Larva Labs released 10,000 punks and distributed them to ETH users for free. The project has not looked back ever since, and an alien punk even sold for 11.75 million dollars this year. Even Visa bought a CryptoPunk worth 150,000 dollars for its corporate collection.

Yuga Labs – Bored Ape Yacht Club

Yuga Labs ranks second on the list of highest trading volume with their Bored Ape Yacht Club amassing 266,843 ETH. The tokens amount to 1.07 billion dollars, which is considerable given the Yuga Labs team wanted to make some dope apes and test their skills.

A few months ago, Sotheby held an auction for 107 BAYC with 101 standards and six mutant apes. The collection sold for 24.4 million dollars, making it the third biggest off-chain NFT sale at any auction house.

Beeple

Mike Winklemann, also known as Beeple, is a renowned NFT artist who holds the record for the highest and the second-highest expensive virtual art sale at off-chain and public auctions.

The artist sold an art piece for 69.3 million dollars in March 2021 at Christie’s, followed by another piece for 28.9 million dollars in November.

Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity is probably the most prominent factor behind NFTs’ global surge. The game holds the title of the first dApp to breach the 2 billion dollar mark in NFT trading volume.

Currently, Axie is just behind CryptoPunks in trading volume, with 776 million dollars generated in Q3. A month ago, land within the NFT game sold for 550 ETH, almost 2.3 million dollars.

Dapper Labs – NBA Top Shot

The fantasy NFT basketball game launched in 2020 as the first sports collectible game. It allows users to collect, sell, and trade cards as virtual tokens representing their favorite NBA moments and players.

The game quickly accrued training volume worth 750.4 million dollars, with LeBron James being the most popular pick among users.
